Bermuda Weed Control Tips

WEDNESDAY, MAY 19, 2010 —

Here are some helpful weed control tips for managing Bermuda grass in your non-Bermuda lawn.

Bermuda isn’t usually considered a weed, but if you notice a clump of it growing in the middle of your Fescue turf, you’ll probably see it as one. Even if you’ve recently laid new sod or overseeded your lawn, Bermuda and other weed seeds can easily spread through the air. It’s common for these seeds to come from nearby properties, especially if a neighbor has a Bermuda lawn.

Bermuda is a warm-season grass. In early spring, it remains dormant while your Fescue greens up, making it easier to spot and treat at that time.

While having a bit of Bermuda in your lawn might not seem like a major issue, it can quickly become a frustrating nuisance. The best way to manage it is by stopping it early. Any small patches should be dug out immediately, with all roots removed to prevent regrowth.

If the problem is more widespread, vegetation control herbicides may be necessary. The ideal time to apply these is in the fall, just before overseeding your lawn.
