Crabgrass Control

Crabgrass is a warm-season, annual grassy weed. Annual weeds grow from seed, mature into plants, and die within a single season, making them some of the easiest to control.

Crabgrass has a tufted appearance and hairy leaves. Its seed heads typically begin forming in April, and it often emerges again in late summer when pre-emergent treatments begin to wear off.

Because Fescue lawns are usually overseeded in September and October, the timing of pre-emergent applications is important. The ideal pre-emergent wears off in August, which allows Fescue seeds to germinate successfully and produce a beautiful fall lawn.

The best way to control crabgrass is with two applications of pre-emergent herbicide. King GREEN includes both applications in our standard full-service program. It's important to note that pre-emergents do not kill crabgrass that has already sprouted. They work by preventing seeds from germinating in the first place.

King GREEN discourages spring seeding in Fescue lawns because we cannot apply pre-emergent herbicide during that time. Without pre-emergent protection, spring-seeded lawns are more vulnerable to crabgrass invasion.
