Nutsedge
Purple nutsedge is the most common member of the nutsedge family in the Southeast. Two other species—yellow nutsedge and green kyllinga—are also found in southern lawns, though less frequently.
Nutsedge is a very difficult weed to control. These are perennial, grassy weeds that spread aggressively through seeds, rhizomes, or underground tubers called "nuts." These underground "nuts" can lie dormant for several years, which means continued monitoring is essential—even in areas that have been previously treated.
Control Methods:
For small patches, digging out the nutsedge—including the tubers—can be an effective solution.
For larger infestations, there are selective herbicide products available that target nutsedge without harming most turfgrasses.
These herbicides are best applied in late spring or early summer, after the weed has emerged from dormancy.
In cases of severe infestation, follow-up treatments may be necessary throughout the summer to control regrowth.
