Quenching the Thirst

As summer heats up and things begin to dry out, it becomes increasingly important to monitor your lawn’s watering needs. It’s hard to overstate just how vital water is to your lawn’s health.

Turfgrass is made up of 75% to 85% water by weight. A well-watered lawn is better equipped to handle sudden temperature changes without becoming overly stressed. Water also gives grass its structure, making it more resilient to foot traffic and other wear.

How Much Water Is Enough?

In general, your lawn needs 1 to 2 inches of water per week. This can come from irrigation or rainfall, so always factor in recent weather conditions.

Each watering session should soak the soil to a depth of about 6 inches to support deep root growth.

Best Time to Water

The ideal time to water is in the morning, when the sun is up but before the heat of the day. Morning watering helps reduce evaporation loss and gives the lawn time to dry out during the day.

Avoid watering in the evening, as cool, damp conditions can promote fungal diseases.
