We Hibernate-Fescue Lawns Do Not

They say the squeaky wheel gets the grease—and this should be no surprise. With few exceptions, people prefer stability over chaos. We typically don't seek out problems to deal with unless we have to.

No news is typically good news.

In the world of lawn care, it’s incredibly easy to “check out” once the growing season wanes and our lawns no longer require constant attention. Without fast-growing grass and weeds popping up everywhere, it’s tempting to stop thinking about your lawn altogether.

But remember—while we in the southern U.S. tend to be fairly sensitive to seasonal changes, plants stay active through the winter.

While we see temperatures below 40 as a good excuse to retreat indoors to couches and football, our lawns and landscapes keep moving.

You may not see much visible growth during the winter months, but there’s plenty going on beneath the surface. Turf, trees, and other plants focus their energy on expanding and strengthening their root systems. Feeding Fescue turf in the fall and winter supports this process and results in stronger, healthier plants come spring.

So as you wind down for the year, let us give your lawn a solid meal that will keep it well-fed all winter. Warm weather will return before you know it, and the efforts you make now will pay off when it does.
