New Sod

Are you considering applying new sod in your lawn? There are a few different things you should know before making this change to your landscape. We have explained it all down below!

Timing

The ideal temperature to install new sod is when daytime temperatures are cool, between 55- and 65-degrees Fahrenheit. You can lay sod anytime during the growing season, although spring and early fall are considered the best time for warm season grasses (Bermuda and Zoysia). This is because the cool temperatures, mixed with occasional rain, can help the sod root much quicker. If you’re installing Fescue sod, it’s better to plant in the early winter. If you choose to sod your lawn in the summer, you must remember to water it at least once a day for several weeks.

Weed Control

To ensure the health and longevity of your sod, it needs plenty of time to take root after being installed. We won’t be able to apply weed control in your lawn until the sod is fully rooted. You will likely encounter some form of weeds. New sod pallets usually have minimal weeds, but you should be prepared to see some weeds poke through when you lay it over soil that already contains live weeds. It’s important to remain patient during this period of time. Applying pre- or post-emergent too soon can be detrimental to the new sod. It can take a couple of months for your sod to take root. The number one goal is to nourish the turf until it is fully rooted.

Communication is KEY

It doesn’t matter if it was two days ago or two months ago. It is extremely important to let your lawn care provider know if you have new sod. This can affect how your lawn is treated. We strongly urge our customers to always let us know about any changes like this. We want our technicians to be as prepared as possible whenever treating your lawn.At King Green, we are always happy to help our customers.
