New Sod

Are you considering installing new sod in your lawn? There are a few things to keep in mind before making this change to your landscape. We’ve explained it all below.

Timing:

The ideal temperature for laying sod is when daytime temperatures are between 55 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. You can install sod anytime during the growing season, although spring and early fall are best for warm-season grasses like Bermuda and Zoysia. Cooler temperatures combined with occasional rain help sod root more quickly.

If you're installing Fescue sod, early winter is the preferred time.

If you lay sod in the summer, make sure to water it at least once a day for several weeks to help it establish.

Weed Control:

Sod needs time to root fully after installation. During this rooting period, weed control treatments cannot be applied. You may still see some weeds appear, especially if sod is laid over soil that already contains weed seeds or live weeds.

Most new sod pallets are fairly clean, but it’s normal to see some weeds emerge. Be patient. Applying pre-emergents or post-emergents too early can harm the new turf. It can take a couple of months for sod to root completely, and your main goal should be nourishing the turf during this time.

Communication Is Key:

Whether you installed new sod two days ago or two months ago, it’s extremely important to let your lawn care provider know. This information directly affects how your lawn should be treated.

We strongly encourage our customers to tell us about any major changes to their landscape. That way, our technicians can arrive fully prepared to provide the right care for your lawn.

At King GREEN, we’re always happy to help. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
