Don’t Underestimate The Importance Of Leaf Removal
Leaf removal is important not only for appearance but also for the health of your lawn. Although turfgrass growth slows or stops during this time of year, the plant continues to photosynthesize (create nutrients and energy). This energy is stored and used during the following growing season.
When leaves are left on Fescue grass, they block sunlight and reduce the plant's ability to photosynthesize. Leaf removal is especially critical for newly seeded lawns, where young grass can die more quickly without light. In addition, leaves that remain on Fescue seedlings can increase the risk of rot by creating a dark, damp environment that smothers weaker plants.
Leaf removal should be done regularly (every 7 to 10 days) rather than waiting for all leaves to fall before cleaning them up. While young grass is still present, it’s best to use a blower instead of a rake. Raking can damage tender blades or pull seedlings from the soil.
Collected leaves can be composted to create nutrient-rich organic matter for gardening, or they can be used as mulch in natural areas.
