What Is Dallis Grass
Dallis grass is a clumpy, grassy weed common in the Southeast. It’s the problem grass that seems to “pop up” the day after mowing. This weed is often confused with crabgrass.
Crabgrass is an annual and can be controlled with a pre-emergent herbicide. Dallis grass, however, is a perennial and cannot be controlled with pre-emergent applications.
Dallis grass reproduces through seeds and rhizomes (underground creeping stems), so mowing will not prevent it from spreading further.
If left unchecked, dallis grass can overtake your lawn. The best solution for a small problem is to dig it out, taking care to remove all of the root system. Spot spraying with Roundup is another option, though caution is required to avoid damaging surrounding Bermuda grass. The Bermuda will usually creep back in and cover areas treated with Roundup.
