Using a Yard Aerator and Planting Lawn Seeds

To maintain a healthy lawn you should utilize a yard aerator and plant lawn seeds. It is important that you use a yard aerator and plant lawn seeds correctly so that you enhance your lawn instead of damage it. Fescue is a bunch-type grass; therefore anyone with a Fescue lawn should aerate and plant fescue lawn seeds every fall (late August through November).

Preparing Grass for a Yard Aerator and Planting Lawn Seeds

Mow the lawn to 1" – 1.5" and flag the sprinkler heads, invisible dog fences and anything you don't want damaged by the yard aerator. Water the lawn as much as possible prior to aerating and planting lawn seeds.

Care After Completion

In order for lawn seeds to germinate, the seeds must be kept moist. Water the lawn for at least 15 minutes in order for the lawn to receive a good soaking. Make sure to follow the watering restrictions in your area as well. Follow this practice for two to three weeks. After three weeks, gradually decrease watering frequency. Try not to mow for at least three weeks after using a yard aerator and planting lawn seeds. Make sure you have sharp blades on your first mowing of the young grass.
