What are Wild Mushrooms doing in my lawn?

Tuesday October 13, 2009 - Why are you seeing wild mushrooms?

The wild mushrooms that you see are likely caused by the decomposition of a previously living organism. It may be old wood, mulch, or a decaying animal. The mushroom that is growing, because of this previously living organism, is composed of millions of fibers, branching and growing underneath the ground. When the conditions are just right (usually when we get too much water) the wild mushroom begins to grown-sometimes slowly, and sometimes very quickly.

The role of the wild mushroom

The role of fungi (or mushrooms) is to decompose dead plants and animals, as well as break down these complex life forms into nutritional components that can be used by the soil.

Another role of wild mushrooms is to exchange nutrients, moisture and protection from another living organism. You may see this type of fungi on the base of a tree. This relationships is symbiotic, in which both the mushroom and the living organism (the tree) derive benefit from each others presence. This relationship can continue for decades while both sides continue to benefit.
