Fighting Fleas

Fleas can be a big problem this time of the year. It can only take one flea entering your home by riding on a pet returning from a walk in the yard to start an infestation problem in your home. The adult flea will lay one egg an hour and deposit them on furniture, carpeting and bedding throughout your home wherever your pet sits. These eggs can hatch and go through their entire life cycle in 30 days, with populations reaching into the thousands in a few months. Controlling fleas is best achieved with a simultaneous coordinated effort involving sanitation, pet treatment and treating the home and yard. Vacuuming the carpet in all the areas where your pet hangs out the most is important. This should be done every day, twice a day in some cases. Make sure to dispose of the vacuum bag in a sealed trash bag every time you vacuum so the adults that were collected do not infest your home again. Your pet needs to be bathed with a flea-dip shampoo or treated with the newer drop formulas applied to the backside of their neck like Advantage or Frontline. Please be sure to follow Veterinary instructions or label guidelines when making any treatment to your pets. If you will need home flea control or lawn flea control lets us know and we would be glad to schedule a treatment for you.
